FOOD: Mercado de San Miguel
My friends and I recently went to visit the Mercado de San Miguel near Plaza Mayor for some grub. We had some Papas (stuffed baked potates with different toppings), stuffed pickled eggplants, cheese wrapped in anchovies accompanied by some spicy olives, some portions of a bacalao puff pasty, a savoury serrano ham and cheese puff, a strangely tasty bacalao ball, and some seafood tapas on freshly baked baguettes, and of course some fresh oysters and champagne to wash it all down! An absolute treat for about EUR20. It was an overload of fresh produce, meats, and seafood. The whole market was enclosed in a recently renovated old-school building which was the original market since the 18-1900s. Absolutely beautiful. The smell of fresh flowers, cheese, salted fishes, pastries, and the clinking glasses of locals drinking various types of vermouth and wines swam across this beautiful house of metal and glass. Sprinkles of fresh mists fell from the installations on the roof to cool the wandering market goers as they shopped, ate and drank happily on a wonderful weekday afternoon.
